Spicy Sweet Tofu Recipe

Our spicy sweet tofu recipe is perfect for you who doesn’t have a lot of time in your hands. This is also a vegetarian friendly recipe!

Tofu is one of my favorite ingredients to cook with because it is very versatile and you can work with different textures (firm, medium or soft) to your liking. We personally love working with firm tofu for this spicy sweet tofu recipe because we are going to coat it with corn starch and pan fry it. Firm tofu is sturdier and hence, less chance of it crumbling while coating.

Simple ingredients are our best friend and we believe that leftover recipes can taste amazing!

To be completely honest with you, we made this dish using whatever ingredients we have left in our fridge – and it happened to be tofu, bell pepper and frozen green beans. You can use other vegetables such as carrots or cabbage too! I imagine adding some pineapple chunks would give a nice tangy taste to the dish.

The crunch from the tofu combined with the spicy sweet sauce is just an amazing combination.

To achieve that crunchiness, you’ll need to coat the firm tofu with cornstarch before pan frying it. For the spicy sweet sauce, you probably already have all the ingredients in your pantry (yes, you’re welcome 😉)! As the name suggests, we use ketchup, sriracha, oyster sauce and soy sauce. If you are not a fan of spicy dishes, you can reduce the amount of sriracha and add more ketchup.

  • 1 1/4 cup cornstarch 
  • 4 oz tofu (1/4 regular tofu pack)
  • 1tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1/2 tbsp sriracha

  1. First, dice tofu into cubes and in a bowl, coat tofu with cornstarch
  2. Slice bell pepper and green beans – you can substitute these vegetables with carrots or cabbage too.
  3. Then, proceed to making the sauce. In a bowl, mix soy sauce, oyster sauce, ketchup and sriracha. Add water to help the sauce mixture mix evenly.
  4. In a wok or pan, heat up 2 tbsp of cooking oil and let it warm. Add tofu and fry until it turns golden. Make sure all sides of tofu are evenly cooked.
  5. Remove tofu from the pan and add the vegetables. Stir for 1 minute and add the sauce into the pan. Continue stirring to prevent sauce from burning and sticking to the pan.
  6. Stir again for another minute. Lastly, add the tofu into the pan and combine everything together.
  7. Serve with rice and sprinkle sesame seeds on top. Enjoy!
