Filipino BBQ is always a classic for me! I moved to the US when I was 5 – and growing up, I struggled with embracing my culture and heritage since it was different from everyone else around me.

The Filipino food I eat is what connects me to my roots, and Filipino BBQ always brings me back to my childhood in Cebu
It didn’t help that I started to forget my native language. I wasn’t sure if I could consider myself a true Filipino or an American. My Filipino accent was gone and I could hardly speak Tagalog. I know some our Filipino Americans friends can relate to this.

As I was cooking this, I started to miss the Filipino food back home. And that’s when I realize that it wasn’t just the distinct smell and taste of grilled Filipino BBQ, but also the sounds of traffic in the background. You might even have memories of drinking soda from a plastic bag with straw.
I want to bring home as close as possible to us who is away with this Filipino BBQ recipe

Of course, for the classic Filipino BBQ marinade, we have to use Sprite or 7 Up! As for the meat, we love using pork belly but you can also do Filipino BBQ with chicken. For us, the highlight of any Filipino BBQ is always the sweet, fragrant glaze meat dipped in spicy vinegar.
Can’t wait for you to try this – let us know in the comments how you like it 😉

ingredients:
Filipino BBQ Marinade
- 1.5 lb pork belly
- 1 onion
- 3 cloves garlic
- 2 cups Sprite or 7 Up
- 1 cup banana ketchup
- ¼ cup oyster sauce
Glaze sauce
- 1 cup banana ketchup
- ¼ cup oyster sauce
- 2 tbsp sesame oil
steps:
- First, slice the pork belly into 1 inch cubes.
- Next, marinade the pork belly. In an empty bowl or container, place pork belly and add onion, garlic, Sprite, banana ketchup and oyster sauce. Then, place the marinated pork belly in the fridge and let it marinate for at least 30 minutes (the longer the better).
- After finished marinating, soak skewers in water for 30 seconds and assemble the pork meat on the skewer.
- Then, proceed to making the glaze. In a small bowl, mix banana ketchup, oyster sauce and sesame oil.
- Next, set up your grill. If you don’t have a grill, you can use the oven and set it up to broil.
- Place the pork belly skewers on a tray if you are using the oven or directly on top of the grill.
- If you are using the oven, broil for 6-8 minutes and then flip the skewers and broil again for another 6-8 minutes. If you are using the grill, grill for 3-5 minutes each side.
- Once the meat is tender, take skewers off the grill /oven and place it on a plate.
- Dip a basting brush into the glaze mix and brush it over the skewers. The more glaze you can apply, the better.
- Finally, serve it with rice and spicy vinegar. Enjoy!

Hi, do I broil this on high or low? My oven broiler only has those two options when broiling.
I apologize for the delay, but broiling on high heat should be just fine!
