Whether you call it crab rangoon or crab wontons, this dish is just irresistible! The crispy wonton shell combined with the soft filling of cream cheese and crab makes the perfect combo.

Crab rangoon is mostly found in American Chinese restaurants – combining the western flavor profile from cream cheese and engulfing it with wonton wrappers that is often used when making dim sum.
We experimented with different ingredients in different ratio and found that the secret is to add kewpie mayo (or any Japanese mayo that has a sweeter flavor). If you don’t have kewpie mayo, you can make one by following this recipe by Nami from Just One Cookbook. You can also substitute this with honey!

The answer is pretty simple – we simply don’t like too much crab flavor in our Rangoon, but if you’re a fan of crab or seafood, feel free to use real crab! We also added some green onions in the crab Rangoon filling to add some crunch and flavor, highly recommend it 😉

Next, we want to wrap the crab rangoon filling in wonton wrappers. Don’t have wonton wrappers? No worries! You can be creative and use spring roll wrappers that are usually used for Lumpia.

Finally, we’re at the fun part of deep frying the crab rangoons!

Deep frying can be a little messy, but I think it’s totally worth it because this is what gives that crispy outer layer of the crab rangoons! Now, it’s finally ready to serve with a sprinkle of green onion. Dip it to sweet sour sauce for the best experience. Enjoy!

ingredients:
- 1 cup imitation crab, minced
- 3 stalks green onion, chopped
- 8 oz cream cheese
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- 1.5 tbsp kewpie mayo
- 1 tsp sugar
- 20-25 sheets Wonton wrappers
- 3-4 cups Cooking oil
- Sweet sour sauce (optional as dip)
steps:
- First, make the crab Rangoon filling. Combine minced imitation crab, green onions, cream cheese, garlic powder, mayo and sugar in a bowl. Mix everything until you form a smooth mixture.
- Next, take a sheet of wonton wrapper. Wet the tip of your finger with water and dab it along the 4 sides of the wonton wrapper.
- Then, place 1 tbsp of the cream cheese crab filling on the center of the wrapper and lift the tip of the wonton wrapper so all four corners meet in the middle and on top of the filling. Use your finger tips to shape the wonton and repeat this step until all the fillings are used up.
- Heat up the oil in your pan or deep fryer at medium-high heat. Once the oil has heated up, deep fry the wontons for 4-5 minutes.
- Take the wontons off heat once it turns golden brown and the outer layer firms up.
- Finally, sprinkle some chopped green onions on top of the wontons and serve it with sweet sour sauce or any dip to your liking. Enjoy!

Very good. I used a can of crabmeat, as we don’t care for the imitation crab texture. Will definitely make again.
