To be completely honest, I was first exposed to chicken teriyaki through Panda Express. I know, there are probably other places to get chicken teriyaki but this became my go to order aside from orange chicken and Beijing beef. I remember we even ordered a tray of chicken teriyaki when hosting family parties. So, of course, I had to remake this at home too!

Chicken Teriyaki has that distinct charcoal flavor and fragrant, which is just perfect when you combine that with the sweet teriyaki sauce.
If you don’t have a grill though, don’t worry! You can still use your oven to cook the chicken although you might not get the same aroma.

I’ve always known that Teriyaki originated from Japan but after a little digging here and there, apparently Teriyaki sauce was created here in the United States by Japanese immigrants in Hawaii who combined pineapple juice with soy sauce to create that distinct flavor. Teriyaki sauce now has spread internationally and chicken teriyaki is probably one of your go-to dishes in your favorite Japanese restaurant!
Teriyaki sauce are usually used to marinade but in our chicken teriyaki recipe, we use it as a sauce which I think works perfectly well too!
We also love serving our chicken teriyaki with rice along with side dishes like seasoned cabbage. You can substitute the cabbage with any vegetable of your liking. To season the cabbage, we use a drizzle of sesame oil, soy sauce and a pinch of brown sugar. Let us know in the comments section what you pair your chicken teriyaki with! 😉

ingredients:
CHICKEN GRILL
- 2 boneless and skinless chicken thighs (6 oz)
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp salt
TERIYAKI SAUCE
- 3 tbsp water
- 4 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1.5 tsp Onion powder (to taste)
- 1.5 tsp Garlic powder (to taste)
- Sesame seeds (sprinkle)
STARCH WATER
- 2 tbsp corn starch
- 2 tbsp water
steps:
- First, remove any excess fat from the chicken and season the chicken thighs with salt and black pepper and then prep your grill. You can also use your oven and heat at 425F for 30-40 mins if you do not want to use a grill.
- Grill the chicken thighs for 5-7 minutes. Whether you are using the oven or grill, make sure the internal temperature of the chicken is at least 165F.
- After the chicken is cooked, take it off the heat and slice your chicken into long strips.
- Now, it’s time to make the teriyaki sauce. First, make the starch water by combining the starch and water on an empty bowl.
- Then, place your pan or wok in low-medium heat. Add water, soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, onion powder, garlic powder, sesame seeds and starch water. Keep on mixing until the sauce thickens and everything is combined.
- Take the teriyaki sauce off heat and pour it on top of your chicken thigh.
- Finally, serve the teriyaki chicken with rice and a side of seasoned cabbage or any vegetable you prefer. Enjoy!
